This week your readings and lessons will focus on the first steps to site assessment. A solid understanding of the attributes and surrounding environment of your garden and landscape is essential in developing a garden design that will properly fit your needs and the needs of the site itself.

What to Do This Week

  1. Join the Zoom session on Tuesday, September 1 at 7pm EST: find the link to Zoom and all recordings in the News & Announcements section.
  2. Work through lessons and required readings
  3. Do the assignments

Readings
    • In the Encyclopedia of Landscape Design:
      • Read Assessing Your Space, pp 132-141, for helpful tips on assessing your garden and drawing your base map.
      • Review Creating a Plan, pp 180-183: bookmark this to refer to later.
      • Read Creating a Site Plan, pp 184-189
    • Read through the entire Site Assessment for Gardeners workbook PDF (pp. 1-56), with a focus on the first five steps and assessment activities. Although you are only submitting the beginning steps this week, reading the entire workbook will offer you a general idea of the entire process of these activities.

  • Overview of Activities 1.1-1.5         

Assignments
  • Complete four activities in the Site Assessment for Gardeners workbook and add these findings on your Base Map in Assignment One. 
  • Begin completing the worksheet from the Site Assessment for Gardeners workbook (pg 59) with information you will collect over the next 2 weeks.
  • Join the Discussion Forum
  • Finally, submit Journal Entry #1
