Lesson 1.1: Review of Materials, Techniques, Elements, Principles...

We will take this first week to simply review materials and techniques, become reacquainted with them and begin to search for study subjects. We will also start development of your portfolio, giving you the tools and ideas to help you create your complete portfolio.

First, if you have not already, please go back one week and look over the course materials. Please purchase those. There are many options out there! Please do not overspend, though as an advanced artist you will find the need to spend more money for better quality material. Any questions at all about supplies, please post a question in Moodle. This course focuses on advancing your skills with several materials, so it can be overwhelming.

A pen and ink artichoke with wonderful detailFor review - I advise that you keep it simple. As we embark on the coming weeks, a single blossom, leaf, cone, seed pod, or piece of fruit will be much easier than a detailed landscape, plants loaded with blossoms, etc. The course is focused on drawing the details at an advanced level of simple subjects, such as a single blossom.

You may want to set some personal goals for yourself, keeping your expectations realistic. If you are a more advanced student, please take the course opportunity as a chance to push and stretch yourself. If this course is a stretch, and you know you have finite time, you may want to limit your subjects to simpler plant material, in an effort to focus. I will look to you to determine what works best for you.

Did you complete the reading assignment for the first week? Now, please read the section in Chapter 1 on developing observational techniques with pencil. Scan the book for ideas about subjects.
