Do you have a favorite medium for botanical illustration?  How has that changed as you've gone through these and other courses?  What  factors affect how you feel about different media?  If you don't have a favorite, how do you use or intend to use different media?

Good morning Carol!
What a great question! My favorite media is watercolor. I love the aesthetic of a misty landscape or a flower fading into the background. I also like how forgiving that media is when it comes to creating color, texture, and fixing mistakes. When I first used alcohol markers I didn't like them at all. The pigment was so intense and so different. However, as I worked with them and became more comfortable I really started to like that media also. I could say the same about each media we have used so far!

Good morning Shelly! Thank you for your response -- watercolor is still a challenge for me, so it's good to hear what others like about it (clearly many botanical artists do like it and have for a very long time). And alcohol markers are a beast, although I love the colors. I too find that this course really helps me become acquainted with different media in ways that make me want to explore it more and improve my techniques with it. Glad I asked the question.

Hi Carol, these are great questions. My favorite medium is watercolor; I love that you can mix pretty much any color imaginable, instead of being limited to certain colors like with markers or colored pencils. I hadn't used it in many years and actually thought I hated it until Botanical Illustration 2, and now I enjoy it the most : )

Hi Bethany - I too find that taking these classes and working with a medium I may not have liked or even considered before may lead me to embracing it. Now I feel that way about colored pencils - it takes a lot of work to get familiar with them (one can mix colors with them, but not as easily as with watercolor), but with the right paper, pencils, etc, they can be fun. I'm going to have to get more comfortable with watercolor! Thank you!
