Hi Everyone!

What do you love most about gardening? What/who inspired you to become a Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV)? What are you most excited to learn about? Feel free to upload photos of your gardens too!

After introductions, you may start a new thread with a Discussion Topic around training modules and respond to those who reply to your post(s). Reply to at least 2 classmates' initial posts. Let's try to keep this discussion thread for now to Introductions.

Can't wait to read and hear more about each of you and what brought you into the MGV Program.

My name is Lori and we had a wonderful vetable garden growing up.

We fed ourselves from that garden. We kids weren’t allowed in it because the produce was so important. My mother was very excellent at growing things. She one first place ribbons in the New York State fair. one for an African violet and a pineapple plant and an avocado plant. A green thumb as people say.

Hi Lori! I grew up with a vegetable garden that my parents fed our family with. It was a large part of my childhood. We spent our weekends tending to the garden as a family and froze our produce to use all winter long. Don't worry, I feel awkward with technology and am a bit intimidated wth this app!

I don’t see links to anything and can’t get the mobile app to work and I had no idea with we would be doing an online course.  It’s summer!  I want to get off my phone!!!

I am excited to share successes and (failures) of our journeys into gardening. I have previously been successful with composting but now my compost bins are all Asian Jumping Worms so don’t think the contents are any good. Tried heating up pile but it is not in the right spot. Can earthworms fight off the Jumping Asian worms?

I love food and cooking and am an artist and designer and love caring for things. My children built me a raised garden bed so I would leave them alone. (kidding but kinda true…). My greatest success last year was my heirloom tomatoes- focaccia, sun-dried the tomatoes, yum! This year trying my hand at garlic.

Good morning, I think I already introduced myself but I am not able to find where on Moodle I did that. My name is Yunhee and I live in Clinton Corners. My family always had a garden and I realized how much I loved gardening when I didn’t have one in New York City. My favorite garden to visit is Innisfree in Millbrook because it is local. I like gardens that have a clean balance with the landscape. I am interested in everything that makes plants grow in this environment. I would post a photo but I have yet to understand this platform.

Good morning fellow classmates! My name is Joyce Mykoniaits.  I'm excited to meet everyone in person and learn how to navigate this app together.  The thing I love about gardening the most is seeing a vision come to life. I come from a design background and enjoy being in nature.  It brings me joy to create beauty and functionality in a kitchen garden and experience the different seasons of a perennial garden.  I'm interested in the Master Gardener volunteer program because I would like to contribute my skills in serving the community, surround myself with passionate people, and continue to broaden my knowledge in gardening skills.  I'm most interested in learning about growing vegetables & cutting flowers, how to battle pests organically, and maintain a garden that adapts to the changing climate.  I would also love to learn about soil types and relationships to specific plantings.  Please feel free to reach out to me!

Hi All! 

Happy holiday weekend to everyone. Looking forward to meeting everyone soon. My name is Kevin Irby, but everyone calls me Kirby. I live just outside Rhinebeck on a little farm and have a bunch of raised beds that I mostly grow various vegetables in. For the questions:

What do you love most about gardening: particularly with vegetables and fruit, it makes me feel more connected and grounded as part of the natural world. There is also just nothing better than a fresh vegetable. 

What/who inspired you to become a Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV): My grandmother! When I was a kid in Texas, she had a huge garden. It was my safe space, and I thought it felt like Christmas every day when we'd harvest things. 

What are you most excited to learn about: I'm most excited to learn more about vegetable gardening since that's my primary interest, but I'm quite excited to learn about the whole realm of things I don't know about around more decorative gardening. I was just in the UK for two weeks where there is a strong gardening culture, and I'm feeling like I may actually step out of my vegetable box!

Attached are a couple of photos. One of some double maroon hollyhocks that are twice my height next to the chicken coop. I harvested a bunch of the flowers today to experiment with natural dyes. The other photo is the tomato bed (six different types), which you can see has cattle fencing as protection from the resident dog, Walter, who loves nothing more than to dig in my raised beds.

Hi Kirby, good morning, those garden beds look great! I am always intrigued with Texas and being able to grow fruits/vegetables/etc. since the climate there is very dry and very hot. It was interesting to learn about your grandparents garden there.

I'd love to see how your dye project turned out! Natural dyes are always are so gorgeous. They might be more muted in color, but the shades are so very pretty.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Nancy Kusior. Things I enjoy about gardening are 1)spending time in the garden  and in nature is peaceful 2) watching  tiny plants grow and produce vegetables and beautiful flowers is so rewarding 3) providing fresh vegetables and herbs for my family is awesome 4) having fresh cut flowers in vases indoors makes me happy.

My grandparents and parents always had a vegetable garden . When I first moved to the area about 20 years ago I attended a few continuing ed classes at Arlington High school on gardening and learned so much. I have been working on my vegetable garden ever since through trial and error. I 

I would love to learn more about vegetable gardening, landscape design, flower gardening , caring for fruit trees, and how to arrange outdoor  pots with beautiful flowers.

Hello everyone. I hope you’re able to read this post. I’ve been a Gardner most of my adult life. My mother had us growing fruits and vegetables in Southern California when I was a small child and have loved working with plants ever since.

I look forward to learning more about gardening here in the northeast through this course. I’ll do my best to upload a photograph, but no promises.

I have a small flower garden at my home, a garden in the Rhinebeck Community Garden, and I’m working to establish a pollinator garden on my property.

Also look forward to meeting everyone in person later this month

Hi everyone, my name is Karen Ziermann, I have always had a love for gardening, it all began with cousins who always had an active garden with flowers and vegetables. Over time they taught me some of the basics, from there my love grew. Pun intended! I am most excited to learn about native plants and which plants work best together. As well as furthering my hydroponics knowledge, which is already a work in progress, reach out if you would like a tour of the hoop house which is in full swing! Looking forward to meeting all of you on the 25th :)

Hi everyone! 

My name is Morgan Wright. I am a self identified chaos gardener. I love slightly wild, native-forward landscapes that resemble the scenery in a Ghibli film. I take a lot of inspiration for my garden from film, another favorite being Iris' garden in The Holiday. For me a whimsical cottage garden is my ultimate goal. I am also big into vegetable gardening. Veggie gardening is where I got my start, with my mom as a child. Now, I have a 1 year old and I have been spending my summer in the garden with him picking zucchini half his size! 

Very excited to be here and to meet all of you soon!

Hello All. My name's Lorraine and I look forward to meeting you all tomorrow,
Unfortunately, the land where I live is rocky ... rocky ... rocky! As a result, I am mostly a container gardener with a number of indoor house plants. I love working outdoors so when my friend Lori (who you will also be meeting) asked if I'd be interested in joining her for this opportunity, I said yes. Just hope I can keep up with all of you pre-master gardeners!

This is Marty Rutberg.
I'm introducing myself.
One of my earliest memories is gardening with my mother and I have been gardening and landscaping all my life,
At one time, long ago, I thought I would be involved with plants in a professional capacity, but that was not to be, so for me, gardening is a hobby.

Over the years I have cultivated vegetables and flowering plants, but have really been focused on flowers for the past 15 or so years. Our property has a variety of microclimates - a stream, sunny areas, woodland, shade, rocky areas, etc. - so I have different gardens in different areas. For example, the "south garden" is fully fenced with many raised beds for showy perennials, while across the stream we have many hundreds of ferns growing above woodruff (Galium odoratum).

I am pleased to be part of the MG program for many reasons, one being that I learn something every time I am in the company of other gardeners.
