Submit Journal #2: Draft an Introductory Statement or your Final Portfolio
For this week's entry, reflect on using logic models and begin crafting your Introductory Statement (can be the Situation Statement on your logic model) for your Final Portfolio. Answer these questions:
1. How was your experience using the logic model for your planning process? How was this different in how your past approaches to program planning?
2. You may not have an answer for this one yet, but now is a good time to start thinking about how you can determine whether or not your outcomes are accomplished. What are some of the ways you will measure your success?
3. Draft an Introductory Statement or your Final Portfolio, which will be a more detailed introduction derived from your Situation Statement on your logic model.
Examples of Introductory Statements:
A. New Community Garden: “Community members will have inadequate access to fresh fruits and vegetables and there is an empty lot that attracts behavior that is unproductive, dangerous, and at times violent. A community garden strategically placed in the community will engage community members with healthy behaviors while also removing potentially harmful visitors and activities from the living environment.”
B. Six Week Summer Course: "A 4-6 week summer course for middle school students, which is based in the garden. The course/garden direction will be decided by the group of kids working together in class discussion groups and with hands-on garden work and real life interactions with members of the school community and community at large. In other words, the children will decide on the reason they want to garden, be it to raise food for the local food bank, for the school cafeteria, or ? "
C. Striving for Sustainability and Stewardship: The [School Garden] program continues to grow each year. At this time, I have older students, former garden club members, volunteering during meetings. But that is not enough. Since it is my desire that this program continue into the future, I need to develop ways to ensure sustainability. The most significant factor with be establishing a committed core of adults who will assist in the various aspect of our school based garden program. This is the focus of my portfolio."
D. A School & Community Garden Showcase Site: "A model garden will be created and designed to aid the teaching and learning of GBL initiatives in schools and communities through collaboration with likeminded goals of community groups and organizations. I think it a worthwhile to investigate or find those organizations that might cheerlead for GBL based on their particular missions including those in the corporate or private sector."
E. Growing Vegetables in the School Garden: "Youth exposure and consumption of natural foods are decreasing due to cost and lack of awareness. However, a main concern of residents is overall health and obesity in children and their families. The School District is open to opportunities that actively involved students and families in opportunities that promote health and well-being."
