Understanding the garden system and that of its surroundings is important in the health and sustainability of the garden. Think about including a lesson or activity where participants of all ages can observe systems and the nature that exists in and around the garden.
These activities are part of the NYS Master Gardener curriculum, and were adapted for the Gardening in Our Warming World: Youth Grow! curriculum and the online Organic Gardening course.
The Sit Spot activity is appropriate for any age, and is part of the Permaculture Observe and Interact activity, where we observe the landscape and nature surrounding it. We revisit the same location for 2-3x a week for two weeks and record our findings. This can be done at home as homework or in class (schools) or on site (community gardens). Participants find this to be a relaxing and mindful exercise where they can pause for a time and enjoy all that nature provides for us.

The Systems Thinking activity illustrates how all the elements of nature depend upon each other.
