The course includes weekly Journal assignments. Designing a garden is a highly personal activity, and these assignments encourage you to reflect deeply on the role you would like your garden to fulfill in your life, as well as recall memories of past gardens that had an impact on you. Being aware of what makes a garden resonate with YOU will help you design a garden that reflects your personality and suits your lifestyle. Because the journal is a more personal reflection, you will not be posting this to others. Only the instructor will see your work. Please submit your journals each week, about one page in length. You will begin submitting entries next week.

Journals can include:

  • Personal opinion and experience.
  • Your personal growth as a gardener, based on what you have learned and how you will put it in practice.
  • How you might address issues and resolve problems.
  • What you admire, like, or dislike, as you observe designers, designs, gardeners, gardens, landscapes, etc.
What one student said:
“I also really enjoyed writing the journals. The deeper thinking it required helped increase my awareness of myself, helped see certain things in a different light, and even helped to resolve some issues.  It definitely helped me clarify and state my intention for the garden I was creating for my daughter.  This enabled me to keep that goal/intention in mind throughout the process, which was also very important.”
