Balsamorhiza sagittata

Botanical illustration requires great artistic skill, attention to fine detail, and technical botanical knowledge. Typical illustrations can be in watercolor, ink, pencil or other interesting media. The illustrations are in life size, or if not, the scale shown, and demonstrate face and reverse of leaves, flowers, bud, seed and root system.

Pen and ink are foundational tools for creating botanical illustrations. During lesson two we will focus on learning techniques to create lines, various forms and interesting textures in black and white. In future lessons we will explore mixed media with ink and colored pencil. Expressive lines and stippling become part of your artistic capability as you practice this traditional illustration medium with modern and unique technical pens, and your quill set.
