Activity 2.3: Soil Characteristics
Read and complete Step 8 ‘Soil Characteristics’ in the Site Assessment for Gardeners workbook.
a) Record the percentage findings from the first part of the activity (Soil Sedimentation) on worksheet at the back of the workbook.
b) If you are comfortable performing your own pH test using a store bought kit, please go ahead and do so. In our experience these kits can be problematic for even the more advanced gardener. We strongly suggest a professional soil test for anyone looking to learn about the pH of their soil for the first time. A nearby lab or extension office can usually find out what the pH of your soil is for a small fee. Call a local nursery if you have trouble finding a place and they should be able to help you. Record your findings from the second part of this exercise on the worksheet at the back of the workbook.
c) Record your observations from the third part (Visual Observations) of this exercise on the worksheet at the back of the workbook.
