Please complete this before our in-person learning session next Wednesday, 3/4. Spend about 30 to 45 minutes completing this activity. There are no right or wrong answers. However, you should be able to justify why you chose the plants you did. If you have any questions, please let me know!!

Garden Design Challenge

Scenario: A client has a sunny, somewhat well-drained, 10' x 5' garden with moderate deer pressure in Central New York (Zone 6a). She wants season-long color with some plants for cutting. She wants to expand by dividing plants over time. She would also like a woody perennial that takes to pruning well. She would like to have it in the garden, but keep it relatively small so as not shade out the other plants. She has no preference for native or non-native.

In small groups:

•       Select 4–6 herbaceous plants (a mix of annuals and perennials) and 1 woody plant (tree, shrub, etc.) using the module 3 resources

•       Sketch a rough layout considering height, bloom time, and spacing

•       Identify which plants can be propagated by division after establishment

•       What would you warn her about regarding jumping worms when she shares divisions?

Share plant lists. Discuss deer-resistant choices and native vs. non-native trade-offs.
