Botanical artists using charcoal!

While charcoal is less common in classical botanical illustration, many contemporary artists now use it to create bold plant portraits that emphasize form and shadow. Sarah Simblet stands out for her dramatic plant studies, using charcoal and graphite. Sue Wickison incorporates charcoal in her preparatory botanical drawings. Michael Landy, though not a traditional botanical illustrator, uses charcoal to explore decay and nature’s fragility. Ann Swan has also produced detailed tonal studies in charcoal and graphite. Many newer artists, especially those blending botanical art with fine art traditions, are increasingly using charcoal for large-scale or expressive plant portraits.
