Took me a minute to figure out how to navigate these forums on my phone. Happy to say I think I got it.
My husband and I built our home on his family's property. There are about 35 acres and those who ask get one acres. Our lot was the first one past the tree line so we had to clear a lot of old dead trees and tried to keep good ones. Before the land had grown over it was once a cow pasture. We discovered there are a lot of rocks, big ones, under the grass. There are also a lot of thick roots that seem to never end when you pull them out. So, that being said, I decided that a raised bed would be best.
Over the last maybe 10 years, I have planted in different areas of the property. The first spot was in the front of my house, we turned the sand box into the first garden. The location seemed okay, but then it didn't. It was full sun, and was also fully exposed to all the elements. I decided to move it to the opposite end of my house. There we have the house blocking some of the south winds. The tree line to the west of the spot blocks the wind from the west, the most common here. There is some later afternoon shade from the same tree line and a maple tree that sits to the south west of the box. If we have any easterly winds that will have an indirect hit on the box. Some areas of our yard flood, but not were the box is.
This year the soil was my issue, and I didn't do much to repair it because I don't plan to plant on this property next year. We will be moving to a new area and will have 5 acres to ourselves so lots of room to grow things! Once we have some space cleared, I will be able to some systems thinking there and plan out next year's garden! If, for some reason we don't get there next year I still plan to move the garden back to the south east side of our current lot.
