System Thinker

I moved to my current house 6 years ago.  I had to make a garden space from scratch. Thinking about the how the space looked when I started and how all of the things that I have done to get my garden to where it is.  It has been a slow process and each year it has gotten better. I tend to map and make notes on my garden every year so that I can see what happens from year to year.

One of the biggest things that I have had to learn is that I have a pretty high water table where I live so if we get rain early in the planting season I tend to lose seed and small plants because of the excess water.  This pattern is something that took me a few years to recognize and it makes me have to be reflective and wait an extra week or two before I put in my seeds.  I have also been working to develop raised beds that allow for many things to be higher and out of the water.  Thinking about the whole system allows for less waste in plants and seeds as well as all of the time that I spent replanting.

I think revising the garden in this way after every season is what good gardeners do. I have never lived in a place long enough to have to learn lessons from year to year until now.

I’m impressed that you not only take notes but you actually look over them again! This is something I need to start doing. Do you have a notebook that you write in or do you do it on the computer? I’m interested in having tips to make this become a habit because I think you’re exactly right. It helps you waste less time and money!

Julie, there are some great apps out there for garden planning and data recording. I like the SeedTime App.
