At The Manse Garden, we started with the aim to support food sovereignty of all beings by growing a food forest in an entire backyard. The original plan was to grow non-native cultivated vegetables in a small fenced area and edible native plants in the rest of the backyard. When it turned out that a garden committee member had overstepped their authority in greenlighting the project, however, we needed to restrict our growing area to one small section of the backyard. We tried growing both non-native and native edible plants together in the small section, but the native edible plants did not provide as much yield per area, which reduced crop productivity. To provide adequate yield for human consumption, we have needed to dedicate more space to non-native crops.
