Hello all!

I'm Laura, and I'll be your MGV Training Facilitator!

Top 3 things I love most about gardening (because who can just pick one?!)

1- The natural beauty of flowers!

2- The satisfaction of eating something I've grown!

3- The peace of doing the hard stuff - weeding, digging up and dividing perennials...etc., it helps me to recenter and forget about other things going on in the world.

My name is Tina Clark. I have been gardening for over 50 years but do not consider myself very knowledgeable. I have as many failures as I do success and have learned to just go with nature. Now that I am retired, I have time to actually learn what will make for a more positive outcome. I am excited to learn more and share with my friends, family and community.

I have so many favorite flowers but will chose the Sunflower for this assignment.

I'm Patty Croteau. I have always enjoyed plants and have had a long time interest in identifying what grows and lives in the world around me. I am a self taught gardener of flowers, vegetables and even some fruit trees. I get a lot of satisfaction from watching things grow and then harvesting from the plants I nurture. It is work, but an enjoyable kind, that is super rewarding. I am always looking for new information so that I can expand on what I know. I am really looking forward to learning in the months ahead.

Yes, I started growing them 2 years ago. I never knew they existed before that. It was a beautiful discovery!

Hi Everyone, I’m Julie. I retired In June from teaching high school biology and psychology and moved to Malone with my husband. We’re building a house which we hope will be finished before the snow sets in…
The top things I love about gardening are
1. Doing physical labor and getting my hands dirty.
2. Seeing all the critters that are enjoying the garden and trying to identify them.
3. Having all my senses stimulated- I love smelling things like tomato leaves and rosemary, feeling the different textures of leaves and flowers, and tasting things like fennel pollen while standing in the sun. It’s also a place where I talk to myself a lot.
I’m really excited to take this class because there is a lot that I don’t know, especially how to handle gardening in cold climates and how to compost effectively all year long. I’m also hopelessly unorganized and my gardening attempts are often me trying to remember what I planted in that particular spot, so looking to try to change that.
My favorite flower? This is like picking a favorite child. I really like Swamp/Rose Milkweed because I love the smell of it. I also like Jewel Weed/Touch me Not because it pops up where I least expect it and the hummingbirds love it.

Hi Robin,

We lived in Port Chester, down near New York City. I lived in Montreal for many years too but never gardened much there so I’m curious to know how such a short season can be extended.  You’ve probably been figuring some of that out the last few years!

Hi Julie,
I also love to identify all the insects in the garden. So. Many. Bugs! For example, I used to get freaked out by the orb weavers, but then I watched them for a whole year and they are so fun!
Oh, and one of my best friends kept a tomato plant alive all winter just so she could smell the leaves. It's such a distinct and summery smell.
Thank you for sharing! I'm excited for you entering this next chapter of life, with retirement and building a house.
See you Saturday.

Hi Julie: Good luck with your house build. I also love to get my hands dirty. Something very grounding about it. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow.
